Osler Education’s Pre-Medical Residency Professional Development (Family Medicine) certificate program is designed to provide medical school students and graduates, who are on the pathway to family medicine residency, an introduction of important topics, knowledge and skills that are important to know and have during their family medicine residency. This program will provide general information, professionalism and leadership insight for students and graduates entering family medicine residency.
Students will learn to recognize ethical norms within medicine and identify common ethical issues they are likely to face. This course will also focus on how healthcare professionals can accommodate different ethical and diverse backgrounds to provide better service to patients.
Students will learn about managing and leading healthcare teams. Assessing and applying the skills and styles of leadership and creating a leadership development plan will be discussed.
This course will be focused on understanding the elements that make up a viable competitive strategy for a healthcare business and increasing the efficiency of healthcare and public health service delivery.
Students will learn how they can improve upon their skill-sets to provide better service to their patients. The way a physician takes notes can affect the way the patient is treated. This course will also cover structured documentation to not only assist the physician but also how the patient is treated.
Students will learn about meeting the needs of Canadian patients safely and with confidence. In addition, this course will focus on controlled substances. How to manage patients using controlled substances and when to prescribe and not prescribe.
Students will learn about provincial billing, what is covered and what may not be covered under codes. Having a better understanding of what Ministry of Health covers will allow physicians to provide this knowledge to their staff and patients.
This course will focus on the doctor-patient relationship, which is in involved for counseling in preventive care. Patient emotional responses and expressions will also be topics during this course. Students will also learn about discussing sexual history with patients of all ages, sexual orientations, and backgrounds. This course will also include prevention strategies towards discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Students will learn the common concerns the patient and Physician may have while a Physical Exam is being performed. This will also be a good opportunity for students to address any personal concerns they have about physical exams and how they can be addressed.
This course will focus on how to determine the psychological well-being of a patient and how to determine if they should be referred to a specialist.
This course will cover the most current and relevant challenges affecting the healthcare industry right now. In the healthcare industry safety is priority. Students will also be refreshed on how to be safe and maintaining safety in healthcare.
Students will go through various difficult scenarios of delivering bad/serious news to patients and their families. This can better prepare physicians with the social skills needed to provide a better service to their patients.
Workers in the healthcare industry can commonly have a difference of opinions. This course will simulate common disagreements that may occur and how to over-come these conflicts with respect and professionalism.
This course will cover how to provide care that is respectful and responsive to an individual patient. Respecting the patient and their values are imperative to providing exceptional care.
Students will go over the several types of family practice models available in Ontario. A family health group vs. a family health team vs. a comprehensive care model etc.
It is becoming more common for professionals with different healthcare backgrounds to work together to provide the ultimate care for their patients. This course will cover the types of integrative medicine more commonly being used.
This course will be a tutorial on how the EMRs are used and how they improve communication and productivity in a clinic setting.
This is an introductory course on the purpose of the CMA.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons is the body that regulates the practice of medicine to protect and serve the public interest. This will be an introduction course will introduce students to the functions and duties of the College of Physicians and Surgeons as well as the registration process.
This is an introduction course on the CMPA. Topics covered will be the vision, values, and what the CMPA offers Physicians.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support training will be provided to ensure all students are skilled and prepared to address a cardiac emergency. Annual Health Examination – Also known as the ‘Physical Examination’, this typical annual examination is where the Physician does an investigation of the body for any signs of disease. This course will cover a general review of systems and constructing a detailed SOAP note. Students will also be exposed to the appropriate way to conduct a Physical Examination for men and women.
This course will cover obstetrics and gynecology as well as maternal and fetal health. Pregnancy and labor will also be addressed as well as common and current medical issues women face. Preventive health screening specific to women’s health will also be covered.
Students will have an introduction to the Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines and how they are intended to optimize patient care.
This course will be an overview of Family Medicine and what makes up this specialty. Students will also learn the different models of Family Practice in Canada as well as how they differ from one another.
This course will be an overview of the several types of Insurance coverage which patients may have access to.
This course will cover the reasons screening tests are important for preventative health and when a screening test would typically be suggested.
Students will review how to keep patient information confidential and the consequences of not having this information kept safe. This course will also cover how to handle concerned family members while maintaining patient confidentiality.
This course reviews the purpose for conducting an assessment, as well as the difference between a minor, intermediate and general assessment.
This course will review the extent of mental health in Family Practice. Patient counseling as well as family/group cancelling will also be addressed.
This course will review the different options available to seniors such as living accommodations and assisted care. Caregiver burnout will also be covered as well as geriatric care resources.
The objective of the Pre-Medical Residency Professional Development (Family Medicine) program is to facilitate the successful integration and introduction of the Canadian healthcare system to Canadian and internationally trained medical students and graduates who will be applying or starting their family medicine residency training.
The Pre-Medical Residency Professional Development (Family Medicine) program is an Instructor-led, lecture style certificate program that runs for a period of 4-weeks (160-hours). It is recommended that notes are taken during class and the Instructors will suggest recommended reading but textbooks swill not be required. The textbook will be a good source to follow and even after the courses are complete. The class Instructors will be Professionals with extensive experience in the courses that are being taught.
This program is for aspiring family medicine residents who would like to get in-depth knowledge and education for the transition from medical school to family medicine residency and independent family practice. This program plays an important intermediary role in a student’s educational path. We enable our students to partake in greater learning opportunities provided through the program. This program does not indicate certification or licensure to practice medicine. Individuals should refer to their local legislative requirements to attain licensure to practice medicine.
